Executive Summary
Dessalines AI is a decentralized financial protocol built on the Base blockchain that digitizes the eso — the centuries-old rotating savings and credit association (ROSCA) that has served Haitian communities for generations. By combining smart contract-enforced savings pools, a revenue-sharing utility token ($DESSAI), and a bilingual Haitian Creole AI agent, Dessalines AI removes the two greatest obstacles facing the Haitian diaspora in building wealth: the trust problem inherent in informal savings circles, and the language and complexity barrier that excludes Haitian communities from decentralized finance.
Mission: To serve as Haiti's first AI-powered financial protocol — giving the global Haitian diaspora trustless, accessible, and culturally grounded tools to build generational wealth on-chain.
The Eso Tradition
The eso (also known as sou-sou in the broader Caribbean, tontine in West Africa, and paluwagan in the Philippines) is one of the most enduring informal financial systems in the world. In its traditional Haitian form, a group of trusted individuals — typically 5 to 20 people — each contribute a fixed sum of money at regular intervals. The accumulated pot is then given, in turn, to each member. The cycle repeats until everyone has received their payout once.
The eso has funded businesses, covered medical emergencies, financed travel, and enabled property purchases for Haitian families for over two centuries. It operates on social trust, community accountability, and shared purpose — values that are deeply embedded in Haitian culture.
But the eso has a fundamental problem: the coordinator. In the traditional model, one person holds the money, manages the schedule, and is trusted by all. When that trust breaks — and it does, more often than the community acknowledges — the entire pool can collapse. There is no contract. No on-chain record. No recourse.
Dessalines AI does not replace the eso's community spirit. It replaces the single point of failure — the coordinator — with a smart contract that cannot lie, disappear, or steal.
Three Failures to Solve
The Trust Problem
Traditional eso pools collapse because they rely entirely on a human coordinator. That coordinator receives all contributions, disburses the pot, and maintains the schedule — all without any contractual obligation or recourse mechanism. Coordinator fraud, mismanagement, and sudden unavailability are documented and recurring issues in Haitian eso circles globally.
The Access Problem
The 3.2 million Haitian diaspora in the United States sends approximately $2.4 billion in remittances annually — proof of enormous financial capacity and savings intent. Yet the tools of modern decentralized finance are almost entirely inaccessible to this community. DeFi platforms assume technical fluency, require English proficiency, and are designed for a user who already understands blockchain concepts. The Haitian diaspora is systematically excluded.
The Language Problem
Haitian Creole (Kreyòl Ayisyen) is the primary language of over 12 million people worldwide. It is not a dialect of French — it is a complete, distinct language. Yet zero major DeFi or Web3 applications offer a Haitian Creole interface, support, or educational content. This is not a niche gap. It is a complete market failure.
The combined result: A community with proven savings behavior, substantial financial capacity, and deep cultural infrastructure for collective wealth-building is almost entirely frozen out of the tools that could help them scale it.
Dessalines AI Protocol
Dessalines AI addresses all three failures with an integrated protocol of three components, each designed to work independently but optimized to function together:
- Digital Eso Pools — Smart contract-enforced rotating savings circles that replace the coordinator with code. Trustless, transparent, and tamper-proof.
- $DESSAI Staking Protocol — A utility and revenue-sharing token that aligns holder incentives with protocol usage. Stakers earn from every Eso pool payout processed by the protocol.
- Haitian Creole AI Agent — A bilingual AI assistant (Kreyòl/English) that operates as a mini app within the Base ecosystem, guiding users through every interaction in their native language.
The protocol is built on Base, Coinbase's Ethereum Layer 2 network, chosen for its low transaction fees, fast finality, strong Coinbase ecosystem integration, and active support for consumer-facing mini apps through the Base app platform.
How Eso Pools Work On-Chain
Each Eso pool is instantiated as a smart contract on Base when a pool creator defines its parameters. The contract enforces all rules without human intervention.
Pool Parameters
| Parameter | Description | Range |
|---|---|---|
| Contribution Amount | Fixed USDC amount per member per round | $10 – $10,000 |
| Member Count | Number of participants in the pool | 3 – 50 |
| Frequency | Time between rounds | Weekly / Biweekly / Monthly |
| Payout Order | Rotation order set at pool creation | Fixed or randomized |
| Pool Type | Size classification | Piti / Gran / Biznis |
Yield on Idle Funds
Between the contribution deadline and payout date, idle USDC held in the pool contract is deployed to Moonwell — a leading lending protocol on Base — to earn yield. This additional yield is returned to the pool member receiving the current round's payout, creating an incentive for on-time contributions and a materially higher effective return than traditional eso.
Trust and Default Protection
- All contributions are locked in the smart contract before the payout round triggers — no coordinator can divert funds
- Members who default on a contribution are automatically flagged on-chain and ineligible for their scheduled payout until the arrears are resolved
- Higher-value pools require $DESSAI staking as collateral to join, creating an economic deterrent against default
- On-chain reputation scores accumulate per wallet, unlocking access to larger pools over time
Protocol Fee
The protocol charges a 1% fee on each Eso payout. 100% of this fee is distributed to $DESSAI stakers on a weekly basis. There are no other protocol fees. Members who pay contribution fees in $DESSAI instead of USDC receive a 0.5% fee reduction.
The Haitian Creole AI Agent
The Dessalines AI agent is a conversational AI assistant that operates as a mini app within the Base ecosystem, accessible through the Base app's XMTP-powered messaging interface. It is the primary user-facing interface for the protocol.
Language Architecture
The agent is trained and optimized for Haitian Creole as the primary interaction language, with full English support. This is not a translation layer — the agent understands Kreyòl natively and responds in kind, including idiomatic expressions, culturally specific financial concepts, and the specific vocabulary used by the Haitian diaspora when discussing savings and investment.
Core Capabilities
- Create, join, and manage Eso pools via natural language commands
- Real-time pool status updates, payout notifications, and contribution reminders
- $DESSAI staking interface — stake, unstake, and view rewards in Kreyòl
- Crypto education in Haitian Creole (building on the existing Bitcoin Kripto Ayisyen curriculum)
- DeFi yield explanations, risk guidance, and portfolio context
- On-chain data via Viem and Alchemy — live pool data, token prices, APR calculations
The agent does not require users to understand seed phrases, gas fees, or blockchain mechanics. Every technical action is abstracted behind a plain-language interface. The goal is DeFi for people who want results, not education.
Token Design and Distribution
$DESSAI is the utility, governance, and revenue-sharing token of the Dessalines AI protocol. It is deployed on the Base network with a fixed total supply of 1,000,000,000 tokens. There are no inflationary mechanisms. There is zero trading tax.
Token Allocation
Staking Utility Tiers
| Stake Amount | Benefit |
|---|---|
| Any amount | Weekly share of 100% of protocol fees from all Eso pool payouts |
| 500+ DESSAI | Join mid-tier pools without USDC collateral requirement |
| 2,000+ DESSAI | Reduced Eso pool fees (1% → 0.5%) |
| 5,000+ DESSAI | Governance rights — vote on pool parameters and protocol upgrades |
| 10,000+ DESSAI | Biznis Eso pool access + priority onboarding for enterprise pools |
The Value Flywheel
The token's value is anchored to protocol usage, not speculation. As more Eso pools are created, more fees accrue to stakers, making $DESSAI more attractive to hold and stake. This increases demand, which lowers effective pool fees for holders, which attracts more pool creators, which generates more fees. The flywheel is self-reinforcing and driven by real financial activity — not trading volume.
Addressable Market
The immediate addressable market is the 3.2 million Haitian diaspora in the United States, which sends approximately $2.4 billion in remittances to Haiti annually — representing both a massive demonstrated savings capacity and an established habit of sending money across borders with high friction and cost.
The broader TAM includes an estimated 180 million people globally who participate in some form of rotating savings and credit association (ROSCA), spanning the Caribbean, West and Central Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and diaspora communities worldwide. The same core product — digital eso pools — is directly applicable to sou-sou, tontine, paluwagan, and chit fund communities with minimal adaptation.
Within the Base ecosystem, MAMO (yield optimization on USDC/cbBTC) and Bankr (natural language trading) are the two leading mini app agents. Neither targets the diaspora, neither serves rotating savings, and neither speaks Creole. Dessalines AI has no direct competitor in this space.

Built From Within the Community
Dessalines AI was founded by a member of the Haitian diaspora who understands the eso not as an academic concept but as a lived cultural reality — and who recognized the gap between what modern DeFi offers and what the Haitian community actually needs.
The founding team brings together two existing community-facing enterprises — Jobs For Us (Haitian diaspora job placement across the US) and the Bitcoin Kripto Ayisyen Telegram community (Haitian Creole crypto education) — as the foundation for Dessalines AI's community distribution advantage.
Why we will win: Cultural legitimacy cannot be purchased or copied. The name Dessalines, the Haitian flag, the Creole language, and the community relationships — these are not features. They are barriers to competition that no team in Silicon Valley can replicate.
The project is named after Jean-Jacques Dessalines — Haiti's founding father and the revolutionary leader who declared Haitian independence in 1804, making Haiti the first Black republic in the world. The name is a statement of intent: financial sovereignty for the Haitian people, on their own terms.
